New Moon

This post it for New Moon. Here on this post, you can comment on what you thought of the book, the characters and anything else you thought was interesting. Since there are people who have not finished the series, this will post will be for people who have read New Moon. Hopefully you have read Twilight as well. When commenting, please don't mention anything else from Eclipse and Breaking Dawn because other people might not have gotten that far. Stay tune and comment!

  1. Yay, someone finally started a Twilight conversation! I liked the ending and the beginning of New Moon but I didn't like the middle for 2 reasons. One is you know how I feel about Jacob... I HATE HIM! He lacks depth and is extremely selfish and always puts Bella in awkward situations. He needs to get the hint that she will always love Edward. The other reason I didn't like the middle is because it was boring because Bella was like mopping around and just craving to hear Edward's voice. Although I was still captivated through the whole middle because I was awaiting for my love EDWARD to come back and be with Bella (even though I wish he was with me). Once they reunited it made the book more interesting because their love for each other isn't really conventional in the way that they don't really like have the obvious attraction, like if they had a mutual friend the friend wouldn't think of setting them up on a date. But that's what makes their relationship totally awesome! Ok sorry Alex I totally posted a long comment you know how I get caught up in this kind of stuff.

  2. Don't apologize for long posts or comments... This is exactly what I want to see! Good job, Amanda.

  3. New Moon was amazing too. This is the book where I really started to like Jacob, because in Twilight you don't learn much about him. I still liked Edward better than Jacob, but I started to see Jacob's point of view so I'm ok with him now. I felt so bad for Bella for almost the entire book, and while reading it I sort of felt depressed along with her- that's how connected I got to it.

  4. I like New Moon as well. It probably wasn't my favorite, but it was a good book. It really depends, because if you are a Jacob fan,(Yve L) then you probably really liked this book. But if you are a Jacob fan,(Amanda H) then this book probably wasn't your favorite. Personally, I like both of the characters. During this book, I wasn't really fond of Edward because of him leaving Bella, but after reading the whole series, I am pretty neutral. During the series there are times that I love Edward and think he is so caring, and then there are other times that I love Jacob. For me, I thought this book was a great addition to the whole series. Thanks for commenting!

  5. I agree with both Alex and Carli, like Carli I totally started to see Jacob's point of view and at one point I felt sympathetic for Jacob, but when he like crosses the line with Bella it always annoyed me because it's like dude it's never going to happen get over it. And just like Carli I became totally depressed during this book because it's like Bella was depressed and since you see everything through her eyes it's kinda hard not to be. Like Alex I got really annoyed with Edward because he left without a good enough reason (and I am in LOVE with him, so shocking, lol) and throughout the whole book I wanted him to come back! This one was my least favorite book because I didn't like how depressing it was. I am really interested in how the screen writers for New Moon will translate this story into a movie. I guess I will have to wait till November.

  6. I liked New Moon but I liked all the other books better than it. I personally like Jacob better than Edward but without Edward the books get pretty boring just because Bella loves him so much that she has no life without him. I really don't feel bad for Bella. I felt bad for Jacob because I feel like he loves Bella more than she loves Edward. I do think Bella goes better with Edward but it sucks to see Jacob hurting like that. He was so nice to Bella but she kind of just left him in the dust once Edward came back. He deserves better but that's just my opinion.

  7. I liked New Moon because of the fact that Jacob, not Edward was in it. In my opinion, Edward is a stalker-like know-it-all. However, I couldn't take Bella's whiny, "I LOVE EDWARD!" narrative.
She doesn't realize what a good friend Jacob is, just goes on and on about Edward.
She has no life outside of him and the Cullens.

  10. Serene -
I agree with you about that Bella is co-dependent on Edward. She almost in a sort of coma when Edward leaves, and even though his reasoning made to sense to HIM, it was cruel and he probably should have tried to look at things in Bella's perspective. If you read any literature about abused women, Bella fits the profile - not physically, but emotionally.

    Amanda -
Both Edward and Jacob have flaws. Edward is overprotective and only looks at the world as black and white. Jacob has a temper, and is holding on too tight to something he can't be sure of. Both are flawed, and the big difference between Edward/Bella and Jacob/Bella is that with Edward, Bella has to give everything else up to be with him, while Jacob is the "safe" choice - she can still have a human life with him.

Clearly, this author believes in the "Bad Boy" persona. The idea that a girl can "change someone," and that danger is attractive.

So, now let's talk about the writing.

I hope you all are in agreement with me that although the story is compelling, the writing itself is subpar. Stephanie Meyer writes like a Morman romance writer. Her story appeals to us, but lacks the depth and often uses cliches to express the character's feelings and emotions.

A lot of Stephenie's characters are 2-d. She doesn't usually take the time to develop them fully, and even Bella, as the protagonist, has little character traits of her own - instead serving as the "average girl" so that the reader can imagine themselves in her place.

If you would enjoy a better-written romance novel, try The Time Traveler's Wife by Audrey Niffenegger (it's coming out as a movie, as well). It involves fantasy as well as romance, like Twilight, but has more depth and is overall a more mature book.

I asked my daughter to recommend a teen novel, and she said to try The Nature of Jade by Deb Caletti. It isn't exactly a romance novel, but it's protagonist does end up falling love and is a good example of a round, developed character, as well as good side characterizations.

Another book that is a good character study is The Perks of Being A Wallflower by Stephen Chbosky. It's a teen book, and it involves some mature subject matter, but deals with it in a very thoughtful way.

  11. I think Bella says things like "Holy Crow" too much.

  12. I heard about The Time Traveler's Wife and its supposed to be good. I am pretty sure that Catherine Hardwicke is directing it and that's why she isn't coming back to direct New Moon.

  13. Interesting observations regarding Stephenie Meyer's writing style, Ms. Barbara. I've heard similar opinions from others who have read her books. You may want to consider sharing these ideas as a post on your own blog (as your coments are somewhat hidden here on Alex's New Moon post). This way, others may be inspired to respond.
